An elderly woman came on board a crowded bus and sat opposite me.
She was tense and intimidating-- with a fierce stare that reminded me of my discipline teacher in the old convent days when she used to stand on a bench and stare at all of us in the hall,
and we would fall so quiet the only sound you could hear was the whirring of fans.
Naturally, our glances met: that awkward moment when you are caught looking at someone subconsciously and you only have less than a second to react.
Out of reflex, I smiled.
Immediately, her tightly pursed lips broke into the kindest of smiles,
and I saw her in a completely different light.
It's amazing how a simple smile can turn everything around.
