Out of desperation to put my sleep pattern right, I decided to heed the advice of some article that I read sometime ago about sleeping well:
"Avoid laptop glares and read a book instead to make your brain tired."
So at 12am I picked up a book that I started weeks ago but never got past the first 10 pages.
Words became sentences, sentences became paragraphs,
paragraphs became chapters,
chapters became
THE WHOLE FREAKING BOOK AT 6AM WHEN THE SUN STARTED RISING!...
I was 3 hours past my 'normal' bedtime. That article was obviously bollocks.
Unless of course the columnist forgot to mention that we should never pick up anything other than the Oxford Dictionary.
The culprit.
"For a new plant to sprout, a seed must crack and die."
I got this off Amazon quite a long time ago, for less than £3 with shipping included.
(Who needs an £89 Kindle when you can get a book for the amount of change lying around in your pocket?)
It's obviously 20 years old and belonged to someone else who did not want it anymore: the pages are dog-eared and yellow, but it adds more joy to the reading that I can toss it around during the good parts without worrying about the precious state of the cover.
All in all it was a beautifully inspiring book about Kuki Gallmann's love, loss and tragedies in Kenya.
The way she described life in the bush was just surreal. It makes me want to pack my bags and go.
Elephants would just turn up and eat all her garden produce,
Elephants would just turn up and eat all her garden produce,
giraffes would randomly block the roads like it was the most normal thing in the world and it makes me think how we dwellers of the metropolitan cities will never know this simple, beautiful life other than from the books and the National Geographic Channel. It actually makes me question what the hell architects are trying to do to this world.
(Definitely should have read this before going to uni!).
It's also a good read if you're coping with loss,
or if you are in a journey as a lone traveler trying to get more out of life.
Thank you, Kuki for the breath of fresh air.
I will make sure my beautiful niece gets the best of your memoir when she's older.
